Echoes of Resilience: A Winter Birding & Sound Bath Experience

February 22, 2026 from 10:00 to 11:00am at the Carrie Murray Nature Center

Begin the day outdoors with a guided winter birding hike led by Brianna Amingwa from Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education. Participants will learn how to identify resident bird species while exploring themes of resilience, migration, and adaptation in both nature and community. The experience will conclude with a restorative outdoor sound bath provided by and Ralinda Wimbush of Women of Color Outdoors (WOCO) Hike and Sound Healing, inviting reflection and grounding in the winter landscape of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park. This immersive experience is free and open to all experience levels.

COST: This event is FREE to the public, thanks to sponsorship of The Friends of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park! Please be sure to register for the event here. 

In case of inclimate weather, this walk will be rescheduled to March 1 from 10-11am.

The Black Business Bazaar Powered by HCEDA

Meet Deeply Rooted at The Black Business Bazaar for a day of supporting local entrepreneurs and discovering unique products! We will be onsite selling fresh honey from the Piedmont Learning Center hives and sharing opportunties with the community!

In honor of Black History Month, the Black Business Bazaar is a vibrant marketplace experience designed to celebrate Black-owned businesses in the region with a spotlight on Howard County through visibility, commerce, and connection.

An initiative of County Executive Calvin Ball, hosted by the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA), this event brings together local entrepreneurs, community members, and resource partners in a high-energy, welcoming environment where shopping, networking, and economic impact take center stage.

Cupid's Arrow Archery - New INDOOR Location!

February 14, 2026 from 3pm to 5pm at Skylofts Gallery

Ditch the Cliché. Aim for Something Real this Valentine’s Day. - Tired of the same old crowded restaurants and stuffy menus? This year, ignite a little spark before the sun goes down. Join Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education and the Piedmont Learning Center at Skylofts Gallery for a unique experience that hits the mark.

Whether you are bringing a sweetheart, a "Gal-entine," or flying solo, this is the perfect way to kick off your evening. From 3 PM to 5 PM, the afternoon is yours to explore. Skip the rigid schedule and wander freely between our interactive stations:

  • On the Range: Channel your inner Cupid with real archery! Our USA Archery Certified instructors will be on the line all afternoon to help you perfect your shot, whether you're a total beginner or a pro.
  • The Honey Harvest Experience: Trade adrenaline for something sweet at our hands-on honey processing station. Help our experts extract honey straight from the honeycomb as you learn to process and jar. Take home your own 4 oz jar of fresh, local honey from Baltimore bees!
  • The Gameroom: Enjoy foosball and arcade-style basketball in the Skylofts mini game room adjacent to the event space.
  • The Fireside: Whenever you need a break, cozy up on the Rooftop Terrace at Skylofts Gallery to build your s’mores, sip a warm seasonal drink, and enjoy good conversation.

It’s adults-only, it’s adventurous, it’s delicious, and it’s definitely not your average hangout. Come for an hour or stay for the whole afternoon—the vibe is up to you!

The Great Library Bird Count with Black AF in STEM

February 14, 2026 from 10:30am to 12:00pm at Crofton Library

Explore the secret lives of our feathered friends at the Great Library Bird Count! Led by The Black AF in STEM Collective, this 90-minute birdwatching adventure at Crofton Library is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience as part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Annual Great Backyard Bird Count.

Our event begins with a short, fun, and interactive talk led by expert birders and science educators, Dara Wilson and Brianna Amingwa of The Black AF in STEM Collective. Learn the stories of a few of the diverse, local birdwatchers  and discover simple skills to spot and identify the amazing birds that call our community home. Afterward, we will borrow a pair of real binoculars and head outdoors to count and search for local birds. Our morning will end with an opportunity to craft your own pinecone bird feeders to support winter birds in your backyard!

Dress for the weather and prepare for a day of fun and discovery at this free event designed for all ages.

MLK Day of Service with Howard Ecoworks - Featuring Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education!

January 19, 2026 from 10am to 2pm at NonProfit Collaborative

Community Building & Environmental Stewardship - Join us for an immersive MLK Day of Service focused on community building, environmental learning, and hands-on stewardship. This year’s program blends workshops, presentations, and volunteer activities designed to empower everyday leaders with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to create impact in their neighborhoods.

Together, we’ll reflect on EcoWorks’ progress and challenges, explore effective ways to communicate environmental issues, and participate in guided breakout discussions that connect ideas to real action. Participants will also learn native seed processing and winter sowing techniques and skills that can be used at home and contribute directly to restoration efforts as part of the service activities.

The day will also feature a native tree giveaway (while supplies last), youth activity table, and space to network, share ideas, and build partnerships that continue beyond this event. Student Service Learning hours (SSL) may be earned through the service activity portion of the day (2 hours).

Autumn Beginner Bird Walk

November 30, 2025 from 8am-10am at The Piedmont Learning Center

A Collaboration with @SharInNature, @Ranger_Bri, and @N_O_C_S

Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education is pleased to partner with Sharon Dorsey (@SharInNature) and NOCS Provisions to offer an early morning birding experience that's perfect for beginners! This leisurely walk is less than 1 mile in total with mostly flat terrain and one short decline/incline. We will explore the unique urban trail system that begins at Piedmont Learning Center and winds through woodlands and meadow to historic Gwynn Oak Park. Common sights along this trail include belted kingfishers, white-tailed deer, wood ducks, and the occasional bald eagle!

Guests who attend our hike with Ranger Bri and Sharon will:

  • Learn to focus, adjust, and use NOCS binoculars 👀
  • Practice locating and identifying birds by sight and sound 🦆 
  • Enjoy cider, coffee, and donuts with new friends! 🤝

Outdoor Adventure Day

EVENT POSTPONED! New Date TBD

Experience the ultimate autumn outing at our Outdoor Adventure Day! Join us on Saturday, October 19 from 1-3 p.m. for a fall-themed event packed with unique activities for the whole family.

Take a guided hike to enjoy the vibrant fall colors, and then cozy up by the campfire to make delicious s'mores. You can even get an up-close look at a working beehive, complete with the chance to suit up like a real beekeeper!

Feeling adventurous? Grab a bow and arrow and test your aim at our target archery range. This year, we're adding a special fall twist—you'll get to shoot at pumpkins! Please note that archery is open to ages 10 and up.

This is an all-inclusive event, and all ages are welcome. Don't miss your chance to make some amazing fall memories!

COST: Adults and Big Kids (Ages 10 & Up): $35, Children (Ages 3-9): $20, Ages 2 and Under: Free

Family Friendly Birding with Ranger Bri

Summer is on, everybody! Feminist Bird Club DMV and Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education are joining forces to bring you something special. Let's share the joy of birding with a new generation. You're invited to bring a kid birding! All are welcome, whether you bring along your own kid, your friend's kid, a niece or nephew, or even the neighbor kid from down the street!

This event is sponsored by the Feminist Bird Club's DMV Chapter so it is free to attend! Registration is REQUIRED.

The Birds and Bees Affair

June 14, 2025 from 10am - 1pm at Piedmont Learning Center

Celebrate the start of summer with the birds and the bees! Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education and the Piedmont Learning Center welcome you to this special seasonal experience. The Birds and Bees Affair is an immersive and interactive event featuring the following:

  • A honeybee hive demonstration with expert beekeeper, Steve Kopelman
  • A guided birdwatching hike 🐦 with binoculars provided, led by "Ranger Bri"  
  • Candle-making with local beeswax 🐝 and a selection of essential oils
  • Fresh honey tasting with a mini take-home souvenir jar
  • Wine 🍷 , charcuterie, and s'mores toasted over a campfire 🔥

The Birds and Bees Affair is an adults only event for those age 21 and up. The birding hike and all activities are beginner-friendly; our guides will be on hand to assist and provide all materials including protective suits for the beekeeping experience. Onsite parking is available at no cost in the Piedmont Learning Center grass lot.
